The air/fuel mixture is then ignited by a spark plug, causing the piston to move down with force (power). The piston then moves back up to compress the air/fuel mixture (compression). The piston first moves down to draw in a mixture of air and fuel (intake). The four strokes are intake, compression, power, and exhaust. A four-cycle engine is an internal combustion engine that uses four strokes of the piston to complete one operating cycle. But what about the engine that powers your car? The majority of cars on the road today have what’s called a four-cycle engine. Today, there are all sorts of different types of cars on the market, from electric cars to hybrid cars.
